Trail Waste Facility Open House

From Solid Waste Services, City of Ottawa

Our City is growing, and with this growth, the Trail Waste Facility Landfill is gaining new neighbours! As part of our commitment to community engagement and transparency, we are excited to invite residents to an open house to ask questions, share concerns and learn about the story of the landfill and the steps we take to ensure it operates efficiently and safely.

To support these goals, Solid Waste Services will be hosting an open house on Wednesday, August 21 at the Trail Waste Facility Landfill at 4475 Trail Rd from 6 pm to 8 pm in the administrative building. Due to safety concerns, the landfill site is not open for tours. We encourage residents to RSVP via email at TrailWasteFacility@ottawa.ca.

This is a great opportunity to learn about the important work happening at the landfill and our everyday commitment to environmental protection, operational planning, odour mitigation, engineering and more.

Odours in the Community

From time-to-time odours are experienced within the community. Historically, the sources of these odours have been highly variable and include biosolids spreading, fertilizer usage, pesticide application, peat excavation, industrial fires, field fires, and operations in sand and gravel pits. If you are concerned that the odour you are experiencing is coming from the landfill, please report it to 3-1-1 so that it can be investigated for potential sources at both the landfill and in the surrounding community.

At Trail, we work to reduce odour events through best waste management practices, routine investments in landfill gas collection lines and capping completed waste cells. Provincial regulations also require staff to investigate all odour complaints received.

To help us accurately record and investigate odour events, we ask residents to call 3-1-1 with details such as the location, date, time, odour type and intensity. Staff will investigate the complaint and follow up with the resident. Odours traced back to the landfill will be reported to the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks.
