Let’s “brush up” on what’s happening this month at Ottawa Public Health (OPH).
April is Oral Health Month, making it a great opportunity to raise awareness of how important good oral health is to a healthy lifestyle.
Free dental screenings and fluoride varnish applications for all ages are available in different locations across Ottawa. Dental hygienists can support clients with enrollments in programs like Healthy Smiles Ontario and Ontario Seniors Dental Care Program. Referrals can be made depending on dental coverage and eligibility. Personalized oral care tips are also provided. Whether it's the best way to brush or how to keep your smile sparkling, OPH’s dental hygienists are here to help you brush up on your dental knowledge.
There are several dental care programs available to help with dental costs:
Healthy Smiles Ontario - Children and youth under 18 from low-income households in Ontario.
Ontario Seniors Dental Care Program - Low-income seniors aged 65 and older in Ontario that have no other dental benefits.
Canada Dental Care Plan - Canadians under 18, seniors 65 and older, and adults with a valid Disability Tax Credit certificate, with an adjusted family net income under $90,000 and no dental insurance.
Please note that each program has specific eligibility criteria. Be sure to check the details to see if you qualify!
Dental health will be featured during the month of April on OPH’s Parenting in Ottawa Facebook page. There will be weekly posts on the following topics:
the first visit to the dentist,
make brushing fun – not a battle,
visiting the registered dental hygienist for free dental screenings and fluoride varnish application, and
general oral health tips.
Remember, oral health is part of our bodily health and is linked to our overall well-being and quality of life.
