Motion on vehicle theft, stunt driving at council
This comes after Ottawa City Council unanimously moved a motion that asks the provincial government to strengthen laws around vehicle thefts and stunt driving.
Barrhaven West Councillor David Hill wrote in the motion that “stunt driving is a reckless crime that puts the driver, other road users and members of the public at large in danger and disrupts our communities with noise violations in the middle of the night, which can be debilitating for seniors and children.”
The area the councillor represents has been a focal point in many Ottawa police enforcement crackdowns. Multiple times, police have laid dozens of charges in a short period of time or broken up illegal car meetups.
According to the motion, stunt driving charges have increased 98 per cent since 2019 and vehicle thefts are rising as well.
Hill asked Mayor Mark Sutcliffe to pen a letter to the Solicitor-General asking for more solutions to these types of crimes.
Some of the suggested solutions include:
New legislation to allow regional police to use sound detection technology that can accurately and effectively target illegal exhaust modifications; and
The strengthening of relevant legislation for vehicle theft crimes, especially for individuals with multiple offenses; and
The strengthening of the Highway Traffic Act for stunt racing, especially for individual with multiple offenses; and
The introduction of an Assigned Vehicle Identification Number program, modelled after the Alberta and Saskatchewan regimes, to crack down on the sale of stolen vehicles within Ontario
