At approximately 13:07 this afternoon, the Ottawa Fire Communications Division received a 911 call from a resident of a two storey single family home in the 100 block of Larkin Drive off of Laming Street and Raftus Square reporting that their vehicle was of fire inside their attached garage.
According to the 911 caller, there were three residents inside the home at the time of the fire and they were all able to safely evacuate. Responding trucks could see heavy black smoke from a distance, so a “working fire” was declared before arriving on scene.
Upon arrival, fire crews confirmed a vehicle was fully engulfed in smoke and flames and had extended to the walls of the garage. Firefighters began a fast attack to extinguish the fire.
A second crew made entrance to the home and began a search or any occupants. With a bedroom right above the garage, Firefighters quickly set up ladders to the windows in the event a rescue was required.
At 13:38, Firefighters completed searching the entire home and confirmed there we no other occupants inside. Firefighters used a dry chemical agent on leaking gasoline from the vehicle while fighting the fire.
At 13:42, the fire was declared under control. Firefighters pulled down the soffit around the garage to check for and extinguish hot spots. One Firefighter was assessed on scene by our partners from the Ottawa Paramedic Service for overexertion.
A fire investigator was on scene to determine the cause and origin of the fire. Firefighters stopped the fire before it could spread throughout the home and all of the owner’s contents have been protected.
